The 5c’s assessment in education

At UCSI Schools ,we are committed to equipping students with the skills necessary for success in a rapidly evolving global landscape. To support this, we use PBLWorks, an internationally recognised framework for Project-Based Learning (PBL), to assess essential 21st-century competencies, collectively known as the 5Cs: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Character.

Beyond traditional academic assessments, our focus is on fostering transferable skills critical for today’s world. Using carefully designed rubrics, students receive feedback on how they apply the 5Cs in real-world projects. This approach enables them to demonstrate academic knowledge while showcasing their ability to organise ideas, communicate effectively and solve complex problems with creativity and innovation.

Throughout each project, students engage in self-assessment and peer feedback to reflect on their progress, strengths and areas for improvement. Teachers provide ongoing guidance and structured checkpoints to ensure continuous development. Evidence of skills and competencies is captured through project work, presentations and reflections.

At the end of the academic year, students receive a detailed report highlighting their achievements in the 5Cs. This report provides valuable insights into their growth, offering a broader perspective on their development beyond traditional grading. An example of the 5Cs report is provided below:

This initiative reflects UCSI Schools’ commitment to preparing students for future challenges by focusing on holistic development and the practical application of 21st-century skills. Through this approach, we aim to nurture well-rounded, forward-thinking individuals who are ready to succeed in an increasingly complex world.

Preparing our students for the future amidst lightning-paced advancements in technological innovations requires our students to develop important soft skills. Apart from honing the indelible human touch, it is vital for them to develop a posture of learning that they can carry with them for a lifetime of growth and progress. For this, we subscribe to the 5C’s, which are essential Learning Skills of the 21st century for shaping responsible Global Citizens who will become inspiring future leaders.
