Primary Years Programme (Grade 1-5)

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) at UCSI International School Springhill caters to students aged 6 to 12. Our admissions begin with PYP1, typically for students aged 6, though children aged 5 and rising to 6 may be considered based on their developmental readiness.
As part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, the PYP fosters the growth of the whole child—academically, socially, emotionally, and ethically. It promotes curiosity, creativity, and confidence through active learning experiences, both within the classroom and beyond.

Learner-Centred, Inquiry-Based Approach

The PYP empowers students to become inquirers, developing their understanding through student-led exploration of real-world concepts and contexts. Learning is driven by questions and curiosity, rather than memorisation and passive instruction.

Students learn through transdisciplinary themes that transcend traditional subject boundaries. These themes provide meaningful contexts for students to make connections between what they learn in school and the world around them. The PYP also supports student agency, enabling learners to make choices, express voice, and take ownership of their learning journey.

This approach helps students develop key life skills—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and reflection—while nurturing international-mindedness and a sense of responsibility.

PYP Curriculum Framework

The PYP curriculum framework at UCSI International School Springhill offers a comprehensive, inquiry-based approach to learning that supports the development of the whole child. It is designed to build both academic knowledge and personal growth through concept-driven, transdisciplinary learning.

The curriculum is structured around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, which provide authentic contexts for learning:

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organise ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

These themes are explored through six subject areas:

  • Language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Arts
  • Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE)

The PYP encourages student agency by giving learners voice, choice, and ownership over their learning. It challenges them to think for themselves, act with integrity, and take responsible action in both local and global contexts.

Through its inquiry-led and concept-based approach, the PYP nurtures curiosity and encourages students to become independent, lifelong learners. Learning is meaningful, relevant, and engaging, enabling students to make connections across disciplines and to the world around them.

The PYP reflects the best of educational research, thought leadership, and global practice from IB World Schools. It fosters the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and understandings that extend beyond academic content, preparing students to be internationally minded and socially responsible citizens.

Assessment in the PYP

Assessment in the PYP is a central component of the learning process, designed to inform and support student growth. It includes both formative and summative assessments, providing a comprehensive view of student progress.
  • Formative assessment is ongoing, providing real-time feedback that helps shape teaching and supports students in refining their understanding.
  • Summative assessment occurs at the end of a unit, measuring the depth of student understanding and reflecting on learning outcomes.
This assessment framework allows teachers to tailor instruction to meet individual student needs, provides meaningful feedback, and informs future learning. The process ensures that assessment is not just a tool for measurement, but also a way to foster continuous learning and growth.
